Come Unto Me
By Frank Higginbotham

The Lord extended this invitation to mankind. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Mt. 11:28-30). In view of the fact that man is lost in sin and unable to provide salvation for himself, it would seem that we would not expect a great deal of persuasion necessary to convince men to accept this invitation. Yet it is quite clear that many are not in a hurry to come to Christ.  When asked about the delay in coming to the Lord, it is not uncommon to hear a whole array of excuses offered. Paul was asked by Ananias concerning why he was delaying. "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16). Is there really any reason for a person to put off coming to Christ? Are we justified in rejecting the great invitation of our Lord? Doesn’t it sound foolish when we try to explain that we need more time? It is evident that we do not have any guarantee concerning future time. It is possible that we do not even have another hour of life. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Heb. 9:27). In view of the great need we have and the greatness of the Lord’s invitation to us, we should not let anything keep us from coming to Christ as soon as possible.
