The Psalmist’s Love for God’s Word

Psalm 119 is an excellent passage for study and self-examination. One of the most striking characteristics of this psalm is the way in which the Word of God is praised. The psalmist described the revealed will of God as His commandments, law, word, precepts, and testimonies. These terms each portray an aspect of God’s revealed will to man.

First, the psalmist loved the commandments of God. He wrote, “And I will delight myself in Your commandments, Which I love. My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, Which I love, And I will meditate on Your statutes” (Psalms 119:47-48). He went on to write, “Therefore I love Your commandments More than gold, yes, than fine gold!” (Psalms 119:127). Are the commandments of God your delight or your burden (1 John 5:3)?

Second, the psalmist loved the law of God. He sang, “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalms 119:97). Is the law of God your daily meditation, or do you scarcely give it a second thought?

Third, the psalmist loved the word of God. He wrote, “Your word is very pure; Therefore Your servant loves it” (Psalms 119:140). Understanding the purity of the Word, he had no misgivings about obeying the Word. Jesus said, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17).

Fourth, the psalmist loved the precepts of God. He pleaded, “Consider how I love Your precepts; Revive me, O LORD, according to Your lovingkindness” (Psalms 119:159). The psalmist demonstrated his love for the precepts of God by the way he lived his life. Do you let your “light so shine before men” (Matthew 5:16)?

Fifth, the psalmist loved the testimonies of God. He said, “My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly” (Psalms 119:167). The psalmist loved God’s testimonies beyond measure. Therefore, understanding their trustworthiness, he kept them.
It is clear that the psalmist loved the Word. The question for you today is, “Do you love God’s Word?” We encourage you to study the Bible daily.
